So You Want to Buy a Telescope

The program is separated into two parts. Part one designed for people who want to buy their 1st telescope. Several questions and issues are raised to help select a telescope that meets your budget and insures that you’ll use the telescope on a regular basis.

Part two deals with upgrading your scope. Your budget and your preference for visual use or photographic use are the major factors in this process. This program is free.

Scope School

You have a telescope sitting boxed in the attic, or basement? Maybe it’s in the bedroom being used to dry shirts. You’d like to use it for stargazing but you have no idea where to begin.

At this program veteran NJAA members will help you to set up your telescope and mount, align the optics if necessary, look at some night sky objects, and track an object if your mount is designed to do so. This program is free.

Sky School

Saturday, Oct. 30th 6:30PM

You know how to use your telescope, perhaps you’re a scope school graduate, but you don’t know what to look for in the sky. Do I always look north to find the North Star? Why can’t I see Orion in July?

NJAA members will show some ways to learn how to locate the best constellations at any time of the year. What is the best time of the month to look for deep sky objects? When can you get the best views of the moon? How do you use a star finder or star charts?

This program has a $4.00 fee which pays for a simple star finder.

The NJAA operates on leased premises administered by The State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry
