Light Pollution News 4/6/01
GAS STATION KUDOS AND WOES The second new station SUNOCO has also used shielded lighting in its canopy. Even though the fixtures project below the bottom of the canopy, the sides of the canopy act as a giant shield and no light projects above the horizon. We can report that the NJAA has obtained a number of surveys that HESS Corp. has produced asking "how are we doing?" One of the items asked about is "adequate lighting." We need to respond that the lighting is horrendous. The glare and light trespass from the station can be seen at least a mile away. This is absolutely unacceptable. We need to tell HESS that Hunterdon County is striving to maintain our rural look. The HESS station looks like it belongs in Times Square and not in Clinton Twp! All over the US everyone is worrying about the amount of energy used and wasted and Hess seems to lead the way in our area with it's abuse. Recently NYC has begun considering options as to not have a similar experience with blackouts as California. Doesn't HESS think it can happen here in NJ? Lets let them know that we don't want them wasting our energy.
TEWKSBURY If anyone has good or bad news about light pollution in an area around the NJAAto report, let us know about it.
