NJAA History: The Building

The Founders | The 10" Project | The Frame and Mount | The Mirror | The Dome

Like any project of great scope, the NJAA observatory and astronomical center began as a idea, then took the next step as the expression of peoples vision. This model by Jack Painter and watercolor rendering by Marc Schneider are two such expressions.

With tools like the 2 and 3 dimensional representations above and architectural services provided by Arthur Aalholm, an architect of Flemington, the plan had taken sufficient shape to break ground. Bulldozer operators Basil Chobin and Herman Broennle, along with Harold Woolf on backhoe and the backs of many members and volunteers cleared the way on the 17 acre site.

The concrete pier for 26-inch telescope was completed 1970 by many members, including Doug Diehl and Boris Tereshko pictured immediately below, right. Construction continued until all the pieces and parts collected to make the facility a reality finally had a place to call home.
