In the late 1950s and early 1960s, before incorporation of the NJAA, the seven founders met informally in each others homes. The prime project during that
time was for each member to make his own 10" telescope. Four founders completed their 10" telescopes.

More than 225 telescopes were represented, Stellafane 1964
In 1964 Charlie Temperley entered his telescope in the annual Stellafane competition in Springfield Vermont. His telescope won first place in the
mechanical and tied for second place in the optical competition. His scope was photographed and written up in Sky & Telescope magazine.
